This gallery contains photographs of different mountain peaks and alpine tundra areas through the U.S. Alpine Tundra is the life zone located above the treeline on high mountain peaks and ranges around the world. In the United States, a majority of this life zone is found in the Rocky Mountains and West towards the Pacific Ocean on some of the highest mountains of the area. The only other two areas of true Alpine Tundra in the contiguous U.S. are a very small portion of the far Northern Appalachian Mountains and the Adirondack Mountains of the New England. The tree line (edge of the habitat at which trees are capable of growing due to cold temperatures and strong winds) in the Western U.S. ranges from around 6,500 feet above sea-level in the Pacific Northwest to around 12,500 feet in areas of the Southern Rocky Mountains of northern New Mexico and southern Colorado.
